The Latin mass officially was changed from Latin to the vernacular during the papacy of Pope Paul VI [September 26, 1897-August 6, 1978]. Paul VI reigned as Pope of the Roman Catholic Church and as Sovereign of Vatican City for 15 years, from 1963 to 1978. He approved the New Order of the Mass in the vernacular in April 1969.
